Comparison

Straight vs. Curved Stair Lifts

The staircase decides. A single flight with no turn takes a straight lift, which can typically be installed in 7 to 10 days. A staircase that turns usually needs a curved rail built for it, which takes roughly 8 to 10 weeks. A landing doesn't automatically mean curved: two straight lifts with a transfer at the landing can sometimes work, if the rider can transfer safely.

A quick test from the bottom step

Stand at the bottom and look up. If you can see the top step with no bend, wedge-shaped steps or landing in between, you most likely have a straight staircase. Any turn — even a few wedge steps at the top — points to a curved rail. Rick confirms this in person.

What about a landing?

A curved rail can carry the rider continuously past a landing without getting off. The alternative is two straight lifts, one on each flight, with the rider moving from one seat to the other at the landing.

Two straight lifts can cost less and install faster, but that transfer has to be safe for the person using it every day. That's a judgment for an in-person visit and, where relevant, the person's doctor or therapist — never something to assume.

Common questions

My stairs have a landing. Do I need a curved lift?
Often, but not always. A curved rail can run continuously around a landing. Some homes instead use two straight lifts with a transfer at the landing, which only works if the rider can transfer safely — that has to be judged in person.
How long until my stair lift is installed?
A typical straight lift is supplied and installed in about 7 to 10 days, subject to availability. Curved lifts take roughly 8 to 10 weeks because the rail is made for your staircase.
How much does a stair lift cost?
Basic straight stair lift installations start at $4,995 plus sales tax, including delivery and standard installation. Curved, outdoor and specialty lifts are priced after measuring.
