Planning a Stair Lift for a Parent: A Caregiver's Guide
Start early, involve the person who'll ride the lift, and ask their doctor or therapist whether a seated lift is safe for them. A straight lift can often be installed within 7 to 10 days of ordering, and faster installation is occasionally possible, so call as soon as a discharge date is likely.

Before a hospital discharge
- Ask the discharge planner or therapist about safe stair use and whether a seated lift suits the patient
- Call early — curved lifts take about 8 to 10 weeks
- Send photos of the stairs from top and bottom to start the conversation
- Plan a temporary arrangement, such as a downstairs bedroom, in case timing doesn't line up
Talking about it with a parent
A lift works best when the person using it wants it. Frame it as keeping the whole house available, not as taking something away. You're welcome to be on the phone or at the assessment.
What we can and can't decide
We match equipment to the staircase and how it'll be used. We can't judge medical suitability — that's for the person's clinicians.
Common questions
- Mom is coming home from the hospital. Can a lift be ready in time?
- Sometimes. A straight lift can often be installed within 7 to 10 days, and faster installation is occasionally possible if stock allows. Call early and ask the hospital team about a discharge plan in the meantime.
- Is a stair lift right for my medical condition?
- We can't give medical advice. Ask a doctor or therapist whether a seated lift is safe for the person; we then match equipment to the staircase and how it will be used.
- Can I send photos of my stairs first?
- Yes, if you can. Photos and/or your own measurements of the staircase are welcome when possible and can help a preliminary conversation. They are optional, never required, and are not proof of fit or safety — a final recommendation always needs an in-person assessment.
