Coverage
Does Medicare Cover Stair Lifts?
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) generally does not pay for stair lifts. Medicare's durable medical equipment benefit covers items that are primarily medical, and the national DME reference list treats elevators and similar home equipment as not covered. Medicare Advantage plans may offer extra benefits that vary by plan and year, so check with the plan directly.

Where the rule comes from
Medicare Part B covers durable medical equipment (DME) that a doctor prescribes for use in the home, when it meets Medicare's definition of DME. CMS publishes a national reference list of equipment categories and whether each is covered; home elevators are listed as not covered because they are not primarily medical in nature.
Seat-lift chairs are a separate category and should not be confused with stair lifts.
Where to verify your own coverage
- Medicare: 1-800-MEDICARE or medicare.gov
- Your Medicare Advantage plan's current Evidence of Coverage
- Missouri's free State Health Insurance Assistance Program (Missouri CLAIM)
- Your local Area Agency on Aging for county programs
Other avenues families ask about
Families sometimes ask about veterans' benefits, Medicaid waiver programs, long-term care insurance and local grants. Each has its own rules and is run by someone other than Heartland. We can provide a written description of the equipment and price, which is often what these programs ask for. We can't tell you whether you qualify — the plan or program decides.
Common questions
- Does Medicare cover stair lifts?
- Original Medicare generally does not. Medicare's national durable medical equipment list treats elevators and similar home equipment as non-covered, though Medicare Advantage plans can differ — check with your plan.
- What paperwork can Heartland provide for a plan or program?
- Ask Rick what documents he can provide, such as a written quote and equipment details. The plan or program makes the coverage decision.
