Do Stair Lifts Work During a Power Outage?

It depends on the model. Battery-powered stair lifts charge from household power and can keep running during an outage for a limited time, depending on the battery's charge and condition. Mains-powered models such as the AmeriGlide Rubex AC run directly on household power and won't operate without it.

Keeping batteries healthy

Batteries last longest when the lift is parked where it charges. Follow the charging guidance in your model's manual. Replacement batteries are available depending on stock.

Planning for outages

If outages are common where you live, mention it at the assessment so the model you choose fits. Nobody should rely on a stair lift as their only way out of a home in an emergency.

Common questions

Does a stair lift work during a power outage?
Battery-powered models can keep running during an outage for a limited time, depending on battery charge and condition. The Rubex AC runs on household power and will not operate without it.
What can I check before calling for service?
Only simple, manufacturer-approved checks: make sure the lift is plugged in or parked on its charging point, the key switch is on, and nothing is blocking the rail or footrest. Don't bypass safety switches or attempt electrical repairs.
