Will a Stair Lift Fit My Stairs?

Most straight, curved, basement and split-level staircases can take a stair lift. Narrow, spiral or unusual staircases are sometimes possible but must be inspected in person. The rail mounts to the stair treads rather than the wall, and one nearby outlet is ordinarily needed.

What decides the fit

  • Staircase width, and how much walking room is left when the lift is folded
  • Space at the top and bottom for getting on and off safely
  • Doorways or hallways near the ends that the rail or parked seat could block
  • Head clearance and the pitch of the stairs
  • A nearby outlet — if there isn't one, outlet work can be arranged

Doorways at the bottom of the stairs

When a door or hallway sits right at the bottom step, the rail end can get in the way. Options such as a folding track or a parking position further up the stairs can help. Which one suits your home is decided at the assessment.

What mounting does to your stairs

Brackets are fastened to the treads. If the lift is removed later, screw holes will remain in the treads, and carpet under the brackets may compress or be marked. Walls are not used for support.

Common questions

What kinds of staircases can you fit?
Straight, curved, outdoor, basement and split-level staircases. Narrow, spiral or unusual staircases are possible in some cases, subject to an in-person inspection.
Will a stair lift damage my walls or stairs?
The rail mounts to the stair treads, not the wall. Mounting leaves screw holes in the treads if the lift is removed later, and carpet under the brackets may compress or be marked.
Can other people still use the stairs?
Usually. The seat, arms and footrest fold when parked. How much walking width remains depends on your staircase and is measured during the assessment.
Do I need an electrical outlet?
Ordinarily one standard outlet near the top or bottom of the stairs is needed. If there isn't one, outlet work can be arranged as part of the job.
